Windows Explorer Slowed to a Crawl

Hello. My computer was working fine but something strange
has happened. Now when I access Windows Explorer it can
take anywhere from 30 sec. to a minute to display the
information. This is the same no matter what program I
use to browse files on the hard drive. For example, if I
go to browse my directories for an attachment in Outlook,
I get the same ultra slow response time. Accessing "My
Computer" is the same way. My machine is otherwise very
fast with a speedy hard drive and a gig of RAM. It's not
hardware related and the problem started happening only
recently. Any ideas?
