Windows Explorer pictures

For some reason unknown to the rest of the world, the
user who had this computer before me decided to place
photos as background. Every time I open my document
lists in Windows Explorer, I see these photos. Not a bad
idea, unless the photos are dark and you can't see your
document list.

Again, I know how to do this in Windows 98, but as a new
user to XP, I have no clue how to undo this.

Can someone help me?

It's stored in the desktop.ini file in the folder. Edit it.

I feel like a complete illiterate here - how is that
done? I've tried opening that file, and get a blank
page. I figure if the pics were put in, they should be
able to come out easily, no?

Start - Control Panel - Folder Options - View and tick Show Hidden Files and clear Hide Protected Operating System Files (and also tick Show File Extensions as that's the terminology that helpers will use).

You should be able to see the file now. Delete the lines that look like this

[{BE098140-A513-11D0-A3A4-00C04FD706EC}]
Attributes=1
IconArea_Image=Folder Settings\Background.bmp
IconArea_Text=0x00408000
IconArea_TextBackground=0x000000FF

The bottom two set the background and text colour if you want to make it more readable with the background. You can add them if they are not there. If unsure copy one and paste it here and we''ll tell you exactly what to do.

Many thanks for your help David. I've printed your
instructions, however, I cannot for the life of me see
any text in the desktop.ini file. It simply is empty, or
looks that way. I'll keep the instructions and wait till
our confused computer guru to show up - he might (yeah,
right) have a clue of some sort as to where the text in
that file have disappeared. (at least it's sunny out!)

Press Alt + Print Screen (with the background thing selected), paste into paint, and mail it to me. Also mail a desktop.ini to me. You are using Windows XP aren't you as Windows 2000 or 98 did it differently.
