Windows Explorer Options

Hi:

In XP I always use theWindows Explorer Details view and I could quickly sort
files in ascending or descending order by Date. That was extremely helpful
when copying and/or backing up files in one folder. However, in VISTA it
seems as if I can only Group Files by Date. Am I missing something? Or can I
actually sort files by DATE in ascending or descending order?

Also, once I set up Windows Explorer the way I like it [Details View], how
do I make that the default for all windows?

Thanks,
Robert

Yes.

And yes.

Same way as XP.

Ronnie:

I tried that and it didn't work because the only column I can click on is
something called "Date Taken". I don't know what that means but I don't have
a "Date Modified" column which is obviously what I need. When I click on
"Date Taken", nothing changes in file sorting.

I'm hoping there's info in the url you sent me that explains how to get the
"Date Modified" column into Windows Explorer. For the life of me, I cannot
understand why anyone with an IQ above 50 would remove the "Date Modified"
column from the default settings.

Thanks for your help,
Robert

Ignore the Group and Date menu. Just click on the Date column header to
automatically sort descending and click again to sort ascending.
See the following website for detailed information on working with Explorer
in Vista.

Pay attention to the Increase Folder View Cache Memory on that website.

Thanks for the explanation. Now that I think about it, there are lots of
photos in the folder was talking about. I appreciate your input.

Actually, what I think has happened is that Windows Explorer thinks
there are pictures in the folder. This is why you have a "Date Taken"
column and not a "Date Modified" column.

Simply right-click the columns area and select the column you want. If
it is not emmediately listed, click on "More..." to get a listing of ALL
available columns.

You can also customize the folder back to the "All Items" template.

I'm having a problem similar to Robert's problem.

I prefer to view all folders with Details view. When working with files, I
find it most convenient to sort them by Date Modified. In XP, 98, and 95,
when you would click on the Date Modified heading, it would sort the files in
ASCENDING order, with the oldest file at the top and newest file at the
bottom of the list. Now, when I click Date Modified in Vista, it defaults to
sorting in DESCENDING order, putting the newest file at the top of the list.
This is utterly and completely ANNOYING since this is the way Mac OS X sorts
by default.

I KNOW I can click the heading again to sort in the reverse order, but why
should I have to? Who decided it was a good idea to change this and not
offer the option to sort the old XP / NT way if you wanted to do so?
Instead, I'm stuck getting confused over and over again when I find my new
files at the top instead of at the bottom - then going back and clicking the
heading again to sort the correct way.

It's human nature to fill a page from TOP to BOTTOM - when I write in a
notebook, the oldest writing is at the TOP of the page, and the most current
(newest) writing is at the BOTTOM of the page - that MAKES SENSE. By
defaulting to a sort where the newest stuff is at the top, Microsoft has
demonstrated their complete lack of knowledge of the area of research known
as "human factors" that dictates the way people interact with machines and
expect machines to interact with them.

Is there a registry key I can modify or something to make it default to the
old Date Modified sort method from XP so I don't have to keep double clicking
like a Microsoft-trained monkey?

I prefer by "Name"

I disagree, I'd be surprised if files sorting newest at the top
would not be most preferred.
The rest of your post was rather petulant.
