When I go into my user account the error message, Windows explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down, come up and my desktop does
not. If I delete my user account will all the files, especially the ones I
have moved to an external hard drive so that I could save them be deleted?

i don't think the issue is
with a user account.

but what makes you feel that
it might be?

a program called profile hive cleaner
is avail from microsoft.com.

it will fix issues with the hive. but
that other error is likely to be caused
by something else, like registry hives.

see if the cleaner helps and confirms your
thoughts...

If you delete a Windows User Account it will generally delete all of the
files for that account. I don't see how this could affect an external
drive, though, especially if you disconnect it first.

What profile hive cleaner? The User Profile Hive Clean Up service,
UPHclean, addresses the issue of the unloading of the user hive portion of
the registry at shut down. How would that have anything to do with the OP's
problem? It doesn't change anything inside the registry, i.e. it doesn't
"clean" the registry.

What do you mean by "When I go into my user account"? Go into it how?

If you think the user account might have a problem test it by creating a new
account. Does the problem persist? If it doesn't then copy the settings
from the old account to the new one, then delete the old account.
