I can't get to Control Panel, My Computer and other
applications. I get the message 'Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close...' The error
report mentiones explorer.exe, code: 0xc0000005.

Also, when I tried to update the Windows Updater, windows
was 'checking for updates' for almost 15 minutes and it
just kept running, nothing showed up for me to update.

Please help!

We need information about the error in order to help. Go to Event Viewer and
copy the information shown for the error. To find Event Viewer, go to
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. To learn about Event
Viewer, open the Help and Support Center and search for the term Event
Viewer. There is an article called Using Event Viewer.

Thats the problem, I can't get to Control Panel - I get
the Windows Explorer error message. The exception code
is 0xc0000005. Is their an alternate way to get to Event
Viewer?

Thank you.

Type Eventvwr in Start/Run dialog.

BTW, have you tried disabling 3rd party extensions in the Internet Options
Advanced tab?

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.
4. Restart Internet Explorer.

If this helps, you may need to identify the extension and remove it. In
addition, run a full scan using Ad-aware.
