Windows Explorer has lost the toolbar

Something happened to Windows Explorer. When I double-
click a disk or folder, I get a window with all the
subfolders displayed, but no toolbar at all. Alt-V does
nothing.

I obviously turned this off somehow, and can't raise even
the menu in the window to turn it back on.

I can work around it by right-clicking the folders and
selecting "Explore" instead of "open." I get the full
toolbar this way, but it's annoying. I have had people
suggest reinstalling my account, since the default account
doesn't have this problem, but I'd rather not have to
build up my preferences from scratch again.

Is there something in the registry I can "tweak" to
retoggle this?

Have you used the View menu to make sure the Toolbar is checked?

The "View" menu is part of the toolbar at the top of the
window. It appears when I use the "explore" workaround.
There is no "view" menu item on the affected windows,
and "Alt-V" does not bring one up. Am I stuck in some
kind of "kiosk" mode?

Toggle the toolbawr setting in the View menu you can see, with all other windows
closed.

If that doesn't help, check the shortcuts that start it for kiosk mode or other
switches?????
