Bob

I am getting the following message when I try to view
files in windows explorer:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1221
ModName: Impgspl.ax
ModVer: 4.0.0.84
Offset: 00011afb
Any ideas on what the problem is and how I can fix it?
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

There are a variety of reasons why this error occurred. If you would post
the error messages from your event viewer, I can a clearer picture of what
is going on. Just follow the directions below.

Good Luck

ACCESSING ERROR MESSAGES IN WINDOWS EVENT VIEWER

Access the Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer. Click on System. On the right-hand side, you should notice any
errors listed since your last reboot. Notice the datestamp and how it
cooincides with activity since your last reboot. Then double-click on each
error individualy. Click on the icon above in the error window that looks
like two pieces of paper to copy the error message to the clipboard. Then
paste it (Ctrl-V or Right-click, Paste) into your reply message here and I
will respond.

You can read a Microsoft KB article on HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in
Event Viewer in Windows XP at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp.

This is one of many error messages in the event viewer.
There are about 200 listed, but this is the most recent
one posted before I started getting the error message.
Please review and let me know if you see anything here.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

The one error you chose to post is not of any real concern right now. Post
the errors you received since your last reboot. If you have 200 error
messages since your last reboot as it has been days or weeks since your last
reboot, then reboot. Then collect the errors that follow.

Of course you don't want to reboot and immediately jump into Event Viewer.
Give your computer at least a few minutes to fully boot, settle in, and
develop the errors. Do whatever you would normally do to generate the error
you first mentioned and then go review Event Viewer.

I just rebooted the computer, as you requested, but no
new errors were posted in the event viewer. Here is the
most recent error posted:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7011
Date: 7/1/2004
Time: 6:58:22 PM
User: N/A
Computer: COMPUTER2
Description:
Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction
response from the PlugPlay service.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

There are a total of about 200 errors posted, but they
are spread out over many days, not since my last reboot.
Thanks,
Bob

ok,
I rebooted the computer and let it warm up then I did
what has been causing the problem, but no errors are
listed in the event viewer. What is causing the problem
is that when I try to view the contents of a cd on my dvd
drive, that error message comes up and it causes windows
explorer to close. I noticed that when I put a different
cd in the drive, I was able to read the cd, so maybe the
first cd is causing problems. What do you think?

Something is causing your Plug and Play service to not respond. You should
be getting other errors since your last reboot. Are you saying this is the
only error since your last reboot?

Austin,
I didnt get any error messages in the event log after my
last reboot, or even after I got the error message box.
The error message seen below is the LAST error message I
have received, which was yesterday.

Bob,

Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Then in Services, find Plug
and Play Service and see what the status is. Stop it and restart it and see
if it generates any errors in Event Viewer when it tries to start. If you
ever need to, you can right-click on any item listed in the Event Viewer and
select Refresh to refresh.

What do you think?
<SNIP>
I could be wrong - it did happen once before - but I think that someone
reporting so many problems as you should:

a) Donate your computer to the local kindergarten.

b) Stop trolling.

c) Offer to help your local church raise funds.

Like I said, I have been wrong ............

Gee Charlie, thanks for your helpful hints. Now, back to solving the
problem.

I opened plug and play from within services, but there
isn't an option to stop it. Am I looking in the wrong
place? I went to My computer, manage, services and
opened up the list of services. Plug and Play is
started, but that's all I can do with it. Anyway, this
problem seems to be limited to one particular cd that I
referred to several messages ago. It might just be that
the cd is scratched or damaged in some way.

Highlite plug and play then click 'action' then select properties.and you can
set there.

B

Bob

Like I said before, there is no way I can select any
other options. All of the buttons are grayed out.
I highlighted plug and play then clicked action and
selected properties, but I cannot change any of the
options.

Bob

Yes, I do have a drop down menu for start-up type. What
do I do, disable it re-enable it?
