Windows Explorer - folder pane problem

Something has become corrupt in my XP pro system. Frequently, when using Explorer with folders visible, it will refresh (on its own) and suddenly most of the folder icons become generic icons with no filenames -- and if I try to refresh or scroll down, etc - the icons just keep replicating. Then if I try to click on any files or folders, it says that they are unavailable. If I close that session of Explorer, and open a new one - everything is fine - but then it happens again. It seems to happen more frequently when the Explorer window is not focused.

Thanks in advance for any help you might have.

First try a System Restore to a time before this started happening.
If that doesnt work then try a
Repair Install. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
