what does windows explorer do when you say "replace" in a copying process
after windows explorer asked you if you want to (because a file with same
name exists)? I replaced a file that I should not have replaced and now I
cannot find it anywhere (recycle bin, file restore utilities)
Does windows explorer really destroy the original informatin on disk?
I would very much appriciate to know about this - thanks!

"Replace" means exactly what it says - Explorer overwrites the original
file. You will have to restore the original from your backup.

Translation of subtle (wiseassed) hint: "Don'tcha wish you had a
backup?"

Wiseassed maybe but how would you have wrapped this revolutionary and
unheard of suggestion of backing up important files?

I would simply have stated "The file has been overwritten and can't be
retrieved. If you don't have a backup - and your situation shows the
value of having a good backup strategy - then it's gone."

Sometimes (and I do mean in a very few special circumstances), files can be retrieved
from other locations on your hard-drive.

It might help to know which file it was that you inadvertently "replaced".
