Windows Explorer File Menu

Steve Barnett

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer where the File menu is taking
several minutes to display.

What happens is that I open Windows Explorer and click the File menu. Then I
get the hour glass for around 3 to 4 minutes before the menu drops down. I
get the same problem with right clicking on the folder list (which is not a
surprise as it pops up the same menu). This happens every time.

I've recently installed a 3COM wireless network, which might be the problem.
However, I get the same problem whether the network is connected or not.

I've tried turning off the option to automatically search for network
folders and printers and have turned off the Display file size information
in folder tips. Neither made a difference.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what's wrong here?

I'm on Windows/XP Pro Sp2 with all the latest patches. One the same networks
is an XP Home system, which does not have the problem.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

These links should help:

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootlist/208.htm#4

Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled:

That's absolutely terrific. I found a problem with a PGP shell extension
which, when disabled, cured the problem. I love ShellExView. Had no idea I
had 256 extension registered!

Many many many thanks.
