Windows explorer error

Nancy

I am completely perplexed.
I am running windows xp/ with the SP2 installed from a
CD. I am also running AVG antivirus (free version) and
using the XP firewall etc. I also have Norton Ghost 2003
installed on this system. I was having some problems so I
reinstalled an image from an earlier date and installed
the SP2 update after installing the image. (Original
image was made March 2004)(This reinstall was tough
because it kept failing but after 3 attempts it did
work.) I don't know if this is important or not.

My computer boots no problem but about 50% - 75% of the
time it will boot up and when I go to do something I get
the message that windows explorer has encountered and
error and needs to close. It does and sometimes I can
then go and work other times I have to reboot and then
things will work correctly.

Since I re-installed my last image I have been getting a
new message that Dr Watson's postmortem debugger has
encountered a fatal error and needs to close. When this
message comes up I need to reboot and then things seem to
work again. (I was getting it a lot and now it seems to
come up only occasionally) I have checked many places for
a fix but can't seem to figure out what to do to solve
the problem.

I hope someone has some idea.
Thanks

Hello Nancy,

Sounds like you have SP2 installed on your computer. I
recommend un-installing it. Norton conflicts with SP2.

Simply Un-install SP2:
- Go to Start/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and
select SP2
- Next boot to the WinXP CD
- Select Repair and follow other screen instructions.
- After it Reboots go to the Desktop.
- Run a 3rd Party Windows Registry cleaner program.
- Defrag the Windows Registry file.
- Then reboot.
- After it Reboots go to the Desktop.
- Check your problem, as it should be ok now.
- Then go to the Windows Update Site and download and
install them again without SP2.
- Wait for a while until Microsoft gets SP2 fixed.

If you would like to correspond further, I have created a
temporary email address you can contact me at and I have
images that would show more details about how to do these
tasks:

No, that's incorrect. No current version of Norton software conflicts with
Service Pack 2. If a user has been faithfully using Live Update their
software will work flawlessly with the new service pack.

Look, my friend, if you have a problem with SP 2 the solution is not to fill
the newsgroup with posts telling people to uninstall it.

Who are you trying to kid? Almost every version of Norton conflicts with
either Windows XP or SP 2. Best operating computers are those that have no
Norton products. Don't you read these newsgroups?

<lol> Don't you read Symantec's web site? How is it that my Norton products
have no problem whatsoever with SP 2? If you're angry at Symantec, making
false news posts is not the way to take revenge.

False news posts??? Have you ever heard of advertising. You are only one
without problems of very very many that do.
Don't jump to conclusions on a sample of one out of many millions.

If you really owned Norton software, you would know that Symantec's
technical support web site has all the information and updates needed to
make current versions of their software compatible with SP 2. You're just
someone with an axe to grind.

And you are someone who just has never experienced how well a computer can run
without Norton. Why don't you try it and see. Then you'll understand and quit
promoting such unneeded garbage. Or, do you work for them?
