Windows Explorer crashes after SP2

System:
Biostar Mobo with AMD 2100+ processor
Integrated Video, Sound, NIC, AMR (disabled)
512 SDRAM, 40gig HDD

OS is XP Professional, fresh install (for the fourth time)

Have tried both with and without latest drivers from
Biostar website.

Updated BIOS to latest version from Biostar website.

Problem:
XP works just fine until I install SP2. Windows Explorer
crashes and wants to send error report, then Dr Watson
crashes and wants to send error report. (I send them)

Start -> Run -> etc. works OK. I can get to a folder or
network share this way and can successfully install
something once I get there.

Attempting to open My Computer or Windows Explorer crashes
and burns each time, leaving the system frozen and/or
unstable. (Ctrl-Alt-Del and Shut Down the only option)

I've tried every fix I can find on MS Support and Technet
sites. Ran Windows Update and installed all updates
except SP2 (including one hardware update for AMD
processors) prior to installing SP2 itself.

Three other systems (two Dell Laptops and one AMD based
desktop) have worked flawlessly. A friend has a Celeron
based system with same problem though, so it's not just me.

Any ideas ?? Anybody else have this problem ??

Thanks for any input.

I would run error checking. It won't hurt. Need help?
open help and support and search for "error checking"

Try to disable the new function Data Execution Prevention.
That helped me in the same situation.

(But beware, the solution involves changing a system file. If you make any
mistakes you may have a problem booting your computer).

Basicly, you have to edit the boot.ini file.

Go to start, control panel, system, advanced, click on settings under
Startup and Recovery, then click Edit to edit the boot.ini file, modify the
bottom line from:

/NoExecute=OptIn

to

/NoExecute=AlwaysOff

Save the change and reboot your computer.

I forgot to mention; I've used four different hard drives, all of which
have passed manufacturer's diags.

Not a disk error problem.

Not to reply to my own post but; hopefully this will help someone else with
the same problem.
It seems to revolve around Windows File Protection preventing some files
from getting updated.
Install the Service Pack in Safe Mode and the issue goes away.
DISCLAIMER
Please note that this was a fresh install of XP Pro with no other software
installed. As always, your mileage may vary.

ARGH I get exactly the same thing.... any explorer icon on the deskto
or even desktop Right Mouse.. Then I have to kill DR WAtson t
resume...

I reinstalled XP Home then SP1 then SP2 and same thing.
It crashes in both safe and NORMAL mode. This new drive was recentl
formatted and is trojan free.

However I have XP Pro (FCK) on another drive and I think is bein
detected and this may be the cause. I had to disconnect XP Pro t
install HOME, but I reconnected before SP1 since this was where
stored the files.

I think it is the BillGates Virus.
