Windows Explorer always opens a new Window

Guest

Dear all,

Just recently, (within the last 24 hours) doubleclicking on a folder in the
list view (right hand pane) of Windows Explorer results in a new window being
created as if I had done right-click "open".

I have checked in the Folder Options and "Browse Folders", the "Open each
folder in the same Window" is selected. I am using Vista Ultimate on x64. I
installed Wise Installation Studio and an update yesterday.

Any thoughts? This is very frustrating!

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Hi Carl,

Click Start, type the following command and press ENTER.

reg export hkcr\folder "%userprofile%\desktop\1-folder.txt"

Then, type:

reg export hkcr\directory "%userprofile%\desktop\2-directory.txt"

Then open the files 1-folder.txt and 2-directory.txt using Notepad, copy the contents and paste them along with your reply.

reg export hkcr\folder "%userprofile%\desktop\1-folder.txt"

Then, type:

reg export hkcr\directory "%userprofile%\desktop\2-directory.txt"

Then open the files 1-folder.txt and 2-directory.txt using Notepad, copy the contents and paste them along with your reply.

Hi Carl,

The registry settings for "Directory" and "Folder" appears correct. With the Navigation pane (left pane) enabled, what's the default choice that's shown when you right-click on a folder in the right pane?

Note: "Explore" should be the default action, if the Navigation pane is enabled. If the Navigation pane is disabled, "open" will be the default action.

Hi Alex,

I don't have a final solution for this problem yet, but I think third-party shell extensions may be involved.

Visit http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm and try the steps listed in "Method 2" a go.

Note:

1. Be sure to run ShellExView as administrator using the "Run as Administrator" option in the context menu.

2. Changes you made in ShellExView are easily reversible.

Should I only be focused on "Context Menu" items? If so, I only see
two non-Microsoft items: Beyond Compare (have used this for ages),
FolderSizes (likewise) and WinZip 4.1. Could any of the other shell

Hi Ramesh,

I called MS support I they found a workaround solution that worked for me.
Here is a copy of the email sent to me from tech support:

"Resolution:
Alex, we tried changing the setting in folder options, we tried a clean
boot, tried booting to safe mode, explored system restore, tested a new user
profile, disabled Norton Internet Security and finally transferred all your
data and settings to a new user profile, using Windows Easy Transfer."

As stated above they created a new user profile in which the problem did not
occur.

Thanks for your efforts

I'm not interested in creating a new user profile just to fix this bug

I'm not interested in creating a new user profile

Perhaps you can create one and test if the problem is seen in that profile also. It would atleast help us determine if it's a per-user or pre-machine problem. After testing, you can delete the additional user account later.

Afaic this is a bug, and a very annoying one at that - I end up with a dozen
or so explorer windows that all have to be closed one by one... Third party
shell extensions shouldn't be able to change this behaviour, should they?

In Explorer - Tools- Options - General Tab

Set to Open Each Folder in the same Window
This is the original complaint - that radio button has no effect.
Explorer - Tools - Options - View Tab - Uncheck Launch Folder Windows
in a Separate Process

Thanks for that idea, but it didn't help either.

I finally tracked through my Restore Points and found that the culprit was
the Sony USB driver for my camera - nothing to do with Explorer, so why did
this break explorer behaviour? (BTW, the driver uninstaller detects an
unsupported OS, and won't uninstall, even though the Installer was quite
happy to give Vista a try!)

Anyway, I now have 400MB of registry dumps from before and after installing
that driver, but I couldn't see anything in the diffs to explain this.
Rameesh, I can email them to you if you care to follow up on this. Email my
display name @actrix.co.nz
