windows error on startup

Hi group.

I have just started to receive an error message on startup

"general protection fault error
please delete file"

is all it says. it comes up on startup on the desktop. I have been just
clicking it off and all seems fine except that now, my internet explorer and
outlook express timeout and shut down after an hour or so. a reboot easily
fixes that problem.... at least for another hour. I am on windows xp-pro.
i have not updated the "2" update as yet on this computer. i have a dsl
service incoming on lan and do not use dialup. i tried to go through the
wizard to repair but that was all dialup stuff. any ideas?
