Hello !

WinXP pro with 2 phisical HD
first Phisical HD = C: ( system and programs )
second Phisical HD = D: data and sources

I have disabled the windows XP "simple shares" option
so that i used the more detailed win2000 sharing system

all my data are contained in a folder named "D:\data" and
this folder was "encritpet" with EFS

Accident : HD 1 crashed ! Hard disk crash ...destroied !
no problem : New disk installed. windows and program reloaded
same user and password with admin rights !

Now the problem : on the encripted D:\data folder, i can see all
my subfolders and files, i can delete the files....
BUT I CAN NOT OPEN; MOVE; COPY MY FILES !!!!

i have tryed to take the "control" and the "ovner" ...but nothing !
what can i do ?

many thanks

tiz

Unless you backed up your EFS user [or Recovery Agent if used] EFS private
key to a password protected .pfx file on external media ahead of time you
will never be able to access those files again. The only possible exception
is if your computer is a member of an Active Directory domain that has a
Recovery Agent configured for all domain computers or you have a backup of
your user profiles from the original install at a time when EFS was used.
The EFS certificate/private key is stored in the user profile which you
apparently destroyed and a new user account with same name/password will not
work. --- Steve

It sounds like the computer is not a member of a domain and you did not
back-up the necessary keys in advance.
If that is the case, your data is effectively gone for good.
See the links near the bottom of this page for ways to help prevent this
type of data loss in the future:
