Windows Easy Transfer Beta - Serious Problem reported

I downloaded the new beta to allow me to transfer my applications also
(https://www.microsoft.com/downloads...EB-4E37-4BE0-ADFC-786786E73E50&displaylang=en)

Following the instructions, I installed it first on my old XP machine, where
it ran fine.
I then ran it on my new Vista machine.

"WETC (Beta) does not support this operating system language...WETC only
supports US English at this time"

Ok - no problem - I had it set to English - Canada - reset it to US English,
all keyboard, etc set to US English.

Ran WETC again - same problem. Uninstalled WETC (Beta), rebooted (with
everything US - English), reinstalled WETC Beta.

Same error.

Tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928634/en-us - but nothing.

Can someone please help?

Thanks!

Hi Neil,

Most transfer or migration software as far as I know are only designed to
help you move data from one machine to another and as such are generally a
waste of money. The applications themselves should be physically reinstalled
on your new machine, particularly when you are using different operating
systems. Be aware that some applications might not work on both machines -
you will need to obtain updates from the makers website for these. If you are
able to install your applications on your new machine then there is a better
way to transfer your data across. This method will leave your data intact on
your old machine so if there is a problem you haven't lost all your data. On
your old machine simply save your data files to a recordable CD or DVD or USB
flash memory device or, if you have one, to an external hard drive
(recommendede). Don't manually copy the data over, however. Access the data
from your applications using the Open option from the file menu and save it
to one or more of the above devices using the Save As option from the same
menu. You can then use these to transfer the data over. Again, don't
manually transfer the data over - instead access the data from your
applications using the Open option from the file menu and save it to your new
PC using the Save As option from the same menu. If you are using the hard
drive method then why don't you leave the data on there? That way, you can
access the data from both machines if you swap the data cables across.

Thanks for the reply Dwarf,

I understand where you are coming from, but what I am really seeking is an
answer to why the WETC (Beta) errors out & how to fix it.
The Beta is supposed to move programs (just like PCMover), and this is
what I really need.

Here's the statement on it capabilitites:

"Windows Easy Transfer Companion (Beta). Windows Easy Transfer Companion
transfers your programs and program settings from your Windows XP-based PC to
your new Windows Vista based-PC. Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be
used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer, and can transfer the programs with
either an Easy Transfer Cable or a network."

So, why won't it work when I have reset everything to US English??

Thanks to anyone who can get this working for me,

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Neil,

I have just had a look at the system requirements and they state the
following:

"Two physical PCs. The old PC must be running Windows XP SP2 and the new PC
must be running Windows Vista - both in U.S. English.
Both PCs must be connected via an Easy Transfer Cable or LAN.
At least 200MB of free disk space.
Must be run as a user with administrative rights."

What type of account are you trying to use in Vista? You need to install and
run it on an account that has administrative rights AND is set to use U.S.
English. Try running it on the account that you setup when first installing
Vista. If you don't want to do this, then temporarily change your current
account from an account with standard privileges to one with administrative
ones. Don't forget to change this back once you've completed the task. Please
remember that this is Beta and, as such, may or may not function as expected.

Thanks again for trying Dwarf,

But, my account already was set to have full admin priviledges before I
installed / started.

I don't know what to do next - either give up entirely, or start surfing
the registry to see if there were remnants left of when i first tried to run
it under English - Canadian.

A logging option sure would have been nice....

Cheers,

Neil
