Windows Defender, possible Host file hijack

Windows Defender frequently posts the following message, "possible hosts file
hijack", and lists under resources the following file/path:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

What is the significance of this? I have been routinley removing the file.
Thanks in advance

Hello Jaktomas1,

if you run spysweeper than WD gives you the opportunity to always allow
it, because spysweeper will do did most of the times (changing your host
file).

Tom, I am running Spy Sweeper in addition to WD. Are you saying that I should
ignore this warning, or is there some other action I should take?

Hi jaktomas1,

if you get the warning about the host file, the you can :Block, Allow,
Always Allow. Choose Always Allow, then you can find it in the Allow
list and you get no more warnings about the changes that where made by
Spysweeper.

Hi Tom,

Just installed WD B2, did quick scan and also had host thingy come up. I'm
currently running spysweeper also, but will probably discontinue it and maybe
go ewido, spysweeper is a freeby with my internet carrier which has been
replaced a couple of days ago. Can I expect this same issue once I remove
spysweeper.

Thanks for the discussions everyone, got a lot of answers from all of you
without having to ask.

Hi Kitten,

if you install a other program that do things with the host file, like
hoster and tweakmaster WD will warn you again but that is supposed to!
