Was checking to see the number of day I have for System Restore points. Have
and noticed that they are now identified as a 'Windows Defender Checkpoint'
usually two or three created for each day. Why/what has Windows Defender
done/changed checkpoint files and is this a better/worse type of system
restore?

Its the same type of System Restore, just more frequently than Windows XP creates them on its own. I personally think its worse, since only so much space is allocated for SR to store information. You lose the ability to go farther back in time.

You are right about fewer restore points are available, as now I only have 2
to 3 days, before it about one week.
Is there any way to control the number of restore points it creates per day
other than what was available before (% of disk space allowed) Windows
Defender?
Thanks Doug.

I have been backing my operating system to a seperate hard drive
(ghost, snapshot, ETC).

System restore will do no good if the system won't boot!

Try loading two programs to access a CDRW. Restore from a backup is the
safest way.

I use Ghost as my main backup tool. Was curious as to why Windows Defender
now creates restore points.

You can turn off the automatic Windows Defender Checkpoints by:

1. Open Regedit
2. Locate key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scan
3. Right click on Scan key, select Permissions, and ensure Administrators
Group access has Full Control
4. Add Value DisableRestorePoint in right panel for the Scan key, REG_DWORD
set to 1
5. Right click on Scan key again, select Permissions, and ensure
Administrators Group does not have Full Control checked
6. Close Regedit

Now, WD will not save Checkpoints, but the rest of the system still will.

Thanks, I'll try this in a few days.
For now I'm trying to determine what triggers Defender to create a check
point several times each day.

it used to be worse. defender used to save like thirteen restore
points during the day.

usually, it'll set a restore point when you start up without fail.
other than that, i can't tell why it's setting restore points, but it
seems to be down to setting four or less per day now.

the slightly older version -- pre 4/12/06 -- was the one that was
notorius for setting upwards of ten points per day.

What triggers WD CheckPoints is the some of the real-time protections
options and certain conditions of the scanning options.

Update:
The first three days Windows Defender created 8 Checkpoint entries when I
viewed the System Restore points.
The last two days (today and yesterday) only one checkpoint (now called a
Windows Defender Checkpoint) created per day. The total drive space consumed
for each checkpoint is consistently the same for all the checkpoints (10 in
total) created during this time span.

Note: Their was no activity of significance that I could determine that
would explain those extra checkpoints.
