Ixue for Windows Update.
- Go to Windows update.
- Click on change settings (on the left).
- Check "never check for updates."
- Remove any other checks (Recommended update and any other).
Then go back to Defender and run the Updates again.

I have updated defender by this method. However, Windows security centre is
telling me that Defender is switched off. This there a problem which
Microsoft are unaware of?

ALSO!
If you are using Microsoft Update you may want to uncheck that box also.
Then when you are done you can put everything back to normal.

The methods discussed above work for me too. HOWEVER, I wonder if this a
permanent fix, or will this same error code come up every time Defender needs
an update!!?? Just thinking out loud.....

Frank, in my case, I have the same error and NO other security programs
installed. None. My new Dell Vista has ben totally exceptional since I got
it over a month ago, and now this error code when updating Defender. I hope
Microsoft fixes this -- I don't know whether the solution stated above will
prevent future problems with this error code.

Solution from MS:
1. Restart in Safe mode (Press F8 after restart)
2. Go to %windir% (Usually - C:\WINDOWS)
3. Rename folder SoftwareDistribution to Softwaredistribution.old
4. Restart in normal mode
5. Go to Window Update (Not Defender update) and search for new update
-In this step the search found the a new definition update for Windows
Defender.
6. Download and install update.

This solution worked for me
