Windows critical update failure

Hopefully someone here can come up with a solution to this
one.

When I try and install any Win XP updates, I get the
following error message during the install phase.

"The software you are installing has not passed Windows
logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.
This software will not be installed."

The download goes OK and I have already tried deleting the
wutemp entries and re-downloading fresh copies to no avail.

Any help will be much appreciated

You may want to try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828031

(Even if you think it doesn't describe your issue directly..)

And, instead of assuming you went through all these troubleshooting options,
I will just volunteer this web page as well:
