WINDOWS CRASHED/HAVE BACKUP OF FILES

I need to know how to restore the registry to my hard drive. I was getting
config.sys file corrupt or missing. I have a backup copy of my drive from
Bounce Back but it is not Pro so I cannot restore it. My computer started
crashing, think it was the power supply going bad and corrupted information.
I tried deleting and reinstalling backups of config, software, sam and so
forth, but it didn't work. Got my computer running on a fresh install of XP
Pro but don't want to have to reinstall software. I also tried writing the
info to my primary drive, didn't work. Tried doing fixmbr and also chkdsk /r
and it didn't work. Can I just replace a certain file with the registry of
my copied drive and copy over all the files and programs to the working new
install to put my computer back to where it was? It is the same XP disk,
same computer and no changes in hardward so shouldn't create a problem in
Windows Authenticity. Any guidance would be appreciated

Oh also had tried a repair install and the recovery console on the original
and backup copy and it didn't find windows on the repair, but did under
recovery. Recovery did not work.

Bad news, Windows XP doesn't use or care about "config.sys" file. IF you
had done a repair install you would probably have come out ok. A FRESH
install on the other hand has wiped out the registry and replaced it
with a clean one. The program files are just a loose collection of
random bytes as far as Windows is concerned. Break out it install CD's
and start reloading the programs.

I still have the originak backup it is untouched. I tried to do a repair
install but windows did not recognize it. It was recognized under the
recovery console.

i wanted to know if I can replace any files of the new install that works
with files from my untouched backup to bring back my original configuration?

Bob this all started with a corrupt or missing config.sys file according to
Windows. I think a power surge from my laser printer caused it. It kept
crashing my computer on the same power outet even though the computer was on
a UPS. I then started getting different errors.

I did try a repair install. It wouldn't find windows on the drive so it
wouldn't give me an option to repair it.

Then you will need to do a clean install. If you have data on the drive that
you need to get, you may be able to access it with either Knoppix (a Linux
distro that runs from cd) or a Bart's PE. Doing that requires a fair amount
of computer skill and only you know your skill level.

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ (Bart's PE)

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

I tried Bart's PE and copied it over. I then did a clean install after
formatting the drive. It loads with an old SP1 I had of XP but then when I
update my drivers to the USB 2.0 or the ethernet card it won't start after
rebooting. Get a quick blue screen of death with a page file error. I tried
going back to last known settings and it still does the same. Had to
reinstall windows and the same.

I think my motherboard is bad. I installed the drivers from the original
Gigbabyte disk and on some drivers it gave the yellow exclamation and said my
Bios may need to be updated. I have the latest version and I reflashed it but
it didn't make a difference. I was going to just copy my program files to C
drive and reinstall my programs so I had all my data, but I can't even get my
driver's updated for SP2. Only things I haven't replaced in the system are
the MB and the AGP video card.

This all started after my Samsung laser printer kept crashing my computer.

Time to start troubleshooting the hardware then.
