Windows Crash

I just got done playing Microsoft Simulator 2004 and went
to reboot my computer. Windows wouldn't start and I got
an message that could not boot C: ini file then a message
that read corrupt or missing hal.dll file. I had to
reinstall Windows again. What a mess. Any ideas on what
may have happened and how to avoid this again?
