Recently booting my computer is taking longer than normal.
About half way through loading there is an ominous boing
sound. When the desktop finally appears, message box reads,
"Windows cannot find 'c:\windows\system32\smrssm.exe'
make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."
On searching I found the file in the recycle bin, restored it but
the same thing is happening.
Googling turns up zilch.
OS=XPpro.
Everything is running as normal when I close the error box, but
it is becoming annoying.

I have run AVG, Adaware. Spybot S&D, all come up with nothing.
AVG will not run in safe mode. ( AVG control centre:- Driver (Core) not
found
Winerr=2). Uninstalled AVG, downloaded latest version. Still won't run in
safe mode. Also did an online scan with Panda. Results same.

Solution appreciated.

Bit of a coincidence, I suggested this to an earlier post - try Start/Run
and type sfc /scannow. This should repair any damaged system file, which it
seems you may have...

Good luck,

Ed

Thanks for you reply Ed.
Did as you suggested, but the problem remains the same.
Back to the drawing board.
