My laptop fails to go into standby and subsequently hibernate after
the period I specified in power options.

So far, from what I have seen from my task manager and hijack this
log, no rogue process is running in the background that could have
cause this. but i noticed one thing; the system idle process is
running high.in terms of cpu usage.

how do i solve this prob?

could i have miss something in the hijack this log?

System Idle is just that, an Idle indicator, doing nothing. You have
some other software or hardware causing and issue.

Windows XP does not enter standby after the exact period that is
configured in the Power Options profilehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/899975/en-us

ok what are the steps that i need to follow in order to identify the
culprit?

My laptop fails to go into standby and subsequently hibernate after
the period I specified in power options.

I had a similar experience using Retrospect Express HD 2.0.214, a backup
utility bundled with Maxtor One Touch external hard disks (and perhaps a
few others). This utility operates in two parts, a user interface and a
hidden part that does the real work. With the UI closed, the background
part takes the Windows focus every few minutes (away from whatever
window the user is typing into). And, this action inhibits whatever
screen saver and power management features the system might have.
