Windows Calender Reminders

How do I get Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit to actualy remind me of tasks or
appointments with Windows Calender? The check is in the box that sais
"reminders should show when windows calender is not running but I don't get
the reminder untill I open up Windows Calender then it is usualy hours
overdue.
 
My (limited) experience with this is that you only get reminders at bootup
or logon, when calendar is not normally running.

So fat lotta good it does me on a machine that I very seldom log off of.
