Windows built in firewall enhanced?

Hi,

If I should choose to use the built in firewall in Win XP SP2, is there
freeware that will complete/expand it so that the sum compares to the free
standalone firewalls out there?

I've been on and off the fence several times, but I've stayed with
Kerio 2.1.5 for app rules and I use the XP firewall also to help cover
the vulnerability Kerio has with fragmented packets.

Kerio also has a weakness in the Admin password. I set mine up over 10
characters to prevent a brute force attack on it.

Together these seem to work really well and the sum of horsepower
required is far less than Zone Alarm, my second choice if I ever do
switch.

I don't know of any app that you were asking about.

So products like b-Wall isn't any good?

It claims to expand on the built in firewall. Since software like this is
starting to come out I thought it might be something out there that was
good . Guess not :)
Trying to install, it doesn't install saying "Error This program requires
Windows NT version 5.01 Service Pack 2 or later." My system is XPProSP1.

Installs fine here on my XP Pro SP2. How useful it is remains to be seen.

Have you tried to install SP2? If not-use the IT install instead of
windows update. Make sure your system is clean first. Most problems with
SP2 install stem from malware present. I have installed SP2 on both my
XP pros with no issues.

I DON'T want to install SP2 and -I think- my system is clean. So, this
products runs only with SP2??

Don't take this the wrong way but it seems you have answered your own
question "it doesn't install saying "Error This program requires Windows
NT version 5.01 Service Pack 2 or later." My system is XPProSP1." That
is why I suggested you install SP2. You will get a better version of IE
and security enhancements.(did I really say that???) You should go for
it unless you are using a pirated copy (SP2 will not install-I've tried)
Try using a third party firewall such as Sygate,Outpost,Zone Alarm to
name a few that have free versions. If you want to build one, there is a
distro of Linux that can be installed on a old machine and using 2
NIC's, turned into a NAT box. What is your current internet connection
setup? I am using Windows Firewall along with Sygate's firewall on a XP
SP2 cable connection(USB) with ICS enabled. I don't have a router yet
but was looking into perhaps building the NAT box and trying it out.

I have a regular copy of XP. My problem with SP2 is that, when I installed
it, some programs of mine didn't run any more.
I have my firewall (Kerio) and I'm contented with it: I was only curious for
a program which seems to control the XP firewall.
Bye.
