Where do you see it set at "automatic"...Try run, type: services.msc
In msc,scroll to windows audio,double click,start service,set to auto,
locate the section that tells xp to restart if it stops, set to restart
service.
Also,if that service is corrupted, and maybe others, open event viewer &
get OS details...

I had the same problem too. I struggled for more than two weeks. I could not dare to do a re format as I was not sure if I would retain back all data and I had the patience to install all the required software again. The first thing I did was to install the audio drivers (and again and again .. several times) which did not work. The other one was updating all the machine driver even this did not work. Neither the anti virus nor the registry cleaners/fixers could fix it. Enough now !!! I got the solution and my machine works like a charm now..

What I did was :
Opened the windows services using services.msc
Located the "Windows Audio" service.
Checked the dependencies (tab) for processes that depended on this service as well as the processes that this service in turn depended on. Set the status of all those process (namely workstation, plug in and play, remote procedure call, computer browser, net logon and so on) to automatic status and restarted the machine. The problem got resolved. I had got this tip from some forum. Many thanks to him for saving me.
