Windows 98 se and internet explorer 6 incompatible ?

Hello ,

I brought my computer to my computer retailer
because of a hardware problem. They found the problem and
fixed it (power supply). But they also charged me 50$ to
uninstall internet explorer 6 and reinstall internet 5.5
sp2 saying that windows 98 se and internet explorer 6 were
incompatible. I strongly suspect a fraud since the
microsoft website specify that the minimum requirement for
IE 6 is windows 98. I called them saying to check on the
website any they told me that ie 6 is working on some
windows 98 se machines but alot of machines with windows
98 se where having problems with IE 6. Is that true ?

Thanks
(excuse my poor english)
Eric

I agree that IE6 and Windows98 have problems. It got so
bad on my machine that I went to Netscape; so far so good.

I'm another Windows 98er who quit using IE6. I'm currently using IE5.5 with
no
problem. I think some older computers have problems with IE6 because other
system requirements may not be met or may just be borderline and because
some older software causes some conflicts. That said, the family here has a
second computer with Windows 98 and IE6. They are co-existing quite nicely.
Guess it's a "mileage varies" thing.

I'm not sure which edition of Win '98 I have, but I've tried "upgrading" to IE6 on two different occasions. Both times I've had problems with other programs, including FreeCell to which I'm addicted :). I was able to revert back to an older version of IE after the first attempt, but I don't remember how. Everything I've read so far says to reinstall using my Windows disk; however, I thought I just used the "Add/Remove Programs" feature and it automatically reset to the previous version. If anyone knows whether this will work or not, please let me know. I can deal with not having FreeCell, but I don't want to attempt this and lose IE completely, or worse yet crash my whole system.
