Windows 2003 Server Variables

Nick

I am having a disagreement with my hosting company they are saying I am
running on a Windows 2003 box. But when I do a trace the values that are
returned are.

SERVER_SOFTWARE Microsoft-IIS/5.0

Server software is set to Microsoft-IIS/5.0 can somebody actually verify on
their own server on a trace that the SERVER_SOFTWARE variable comes back as
Microsoft-IIS/6.0.

Thanks,
Nick

Windows 2000 Svr. reports: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Windows XP Pro reports: Microsoft-IIS/5.1
Windows 2003 Ent. Svr. reports: Microsoft-IIS/6.0

Unless your hosting company has changed thier server's environmental
variables (which I doubt they would), it looks like you are running off a
Windows 2000 Server.

it's a black and white issue. it reports what it sees, not what they say it
should report. let them know there aint no gray colors here. you paying for
this service, they are giving you the short end of the stick and adding
insult to injury on the way down. IMO

Yeah because check this out. http://beta.omniportal.net/Version.aspx I
created a small script to verify the OS version number something that they
can't change easily. Last night I think they changed the environmental
variables to show IIS 6.0 just to try and fool me because this morning I cam
back and it was back at IIS 5.0. I was going to give them a benifit of the
doubt and maybe they had to make IIS 6.0 look like IIS 5.0 for some internal
crap. So I created the page above just to verify the data.

ASP.NET requires IIS 6.0. How could your .aspx files be running at all if
you host is running 2000 & IIS 5.0.

You should just call them and ask them to explain why you are seeing what
you are seeing and see what they say.

well what do you expect them to say? they are obviously dishonest about it.
it's all about hooking the customer by being dishonest about the services
and products provided. I'd bypass these support people and launch a formal
complaint to corporate office with the names and titles of the people taking
me for a ride. I'd threaten to expose their *enron accounting. That's really
how you get things to change. IMO.

not. ASP.NET runs under IIS 5.0, too. And what if they are running IIS6 in
"IIS5 compatability mode" what would be reported then?
hope this helps.
