Windows 2000 workstations registering (same as parent forder) records

I have a problem where a few random Windows 2000 workstations
occasionally register a blank or '(same as parent folder)' DNS record.

I know that domain controllers are supposed to register these records,
but these are seemingly ordinary workstations.

Does anyone know if this is caused by a configuration error on the
workstations or bug in 2000 Professional. I would also be interested
on any server workarounds for this problem. I'm not using secure
dynamic updates, but don't think it would help anyway, since these
workstations are part of the domain and are therefore trusted to
register DNS records.

I have heard of this happening several times, I could never find the root
cause, but the blank records are Netlogon registrations. If you delete the
record and the workstations continue creating them, check the client
workstations for netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files in the
%systemroot%\system32\config directory. Only DCs should have these files and
make Netlogon registrations.
So, if you have workstations with these files delete them, I've not yet had
a workstation recreate the netlogon.dns and netlogon.dnb files after they
were deleted, which is one reason why I haven't found the root cause.
