Hi Guys,

Could you please help me with a bit of research I have to do for a uni
project

As network admin and support people if you could develop a a tool or
utility to make you job easier. What would it be? eg a patch install
utility, security scanner etc..

Cheers

Patch install utility would definitely be a SUS server. There are a plethora
of security scanners out there. Try Microsoft's HFNetCheck as well as the
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).

The big three were added in Win2003 server(or by downloads from
the MS website):

Baseline Security Analyzer (descendent of HFNetcheck, command line and GUI
reports.)
Resultant Set of Policies (planning "what if" and logging "what happened"
modes)
Software Update Server (like a local Microsoft Update)

A permission management tool that has all the capabilities of
"SetACL.exe" (SourceForge.net) and both the ease of use of
"Explorer" and the scripting options and clarity of normal command
line tools would be nice (if it were free.)
