Windows 2000 upgrade to XP

When I purchased my Compaq laptop it had ME installed and I received an
upgrade disk to XP; Instead of either of those I installed Win2000pro and
have used it for 2 years. Now I would like to install the XP upgrade but get
an error message stating there is no upgrade path. I never had a disc for ME
so can not reinstall it to then use the XP upgrade disc. Can anyone tell how
to get around this error and install XP without having to purchase another
copy of XP?
