windows 2000 start up menu and tool bars

when I open windows 2000, the start up menu will not come
up, some of the icons are missing, apparently to the left
of the screen and when I open word 2000, some of the tool
bars are also hidden to the left of the screen. What do I
need to do to align the screen.
 
A couple of questions, do you have a flat panel, or crt monitor.
a few reasons for this, are you have the display settings set to the wrong
resolution for your monitor. try a couple of different settings.
Make sure the refresh rate matches your monitors range.
Try using the onboard menu on your monitor and adjust the screen, you can
make its smaller and move the image around.
