After installing a PCI NIC, Windows 2000 Server locks up just prior to the
log-on box appearing.

The monitor goes black with a series of jagged liones horizontally across
the top.

Works fine after removing the NIC.

Tried using Windows 2000 Server drivers for NIC and drivers that came with
NIC.

Getting ready to load Windows 2000 Professional on a spare hard drive to see
if that works.

Ideas to make NIC card work with current setup would be appreciated.

Thx ~

The quickest and easiest solution is probably to try a different
brand of network adapter. They are cheap!

I should have written in my first post...
I have tried two different brands NIC, no luck.

This morning I installed Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on a different hard drive.
No improvement.

What's is interesting is that when the NIC card is installed with the
computer off, the computer boots, Windows begins to start, then locks up with
strange graphics just when the Windows log-on box should open.

But if the NIC card is installed after Windows is up and running, it works
fine.
(Until the computer is shut down and you try to start it.)

This sounds like an interrupt problem. I recommend you
get into your BIOS (usually by pressing the Delete key at
boot time) and check your Plug&Play settings.

When the computer refuses to restart then you can probably
restart it in Safe Mode (Press F8 at boot time). This will
allow you either to disable the network adapter, or to change
its interrupt settings.

I just installed an ISA NIC and the computer works fine.

For the sake of curiosity, I will try the PCI NIC again and investige the
interrupt as you suggest.
