I have an installation of W2K Server that will not boot
following a problem with the SCSI bus on the machine. I
have resolved the SCSI problem, but cannot now boot in to
windows and just get a flashing cursor. When I went to the
Recovery Console it found a Windows installation but
although I selected it I was not prompted for a password.
I was initially unable to access the system drive at all
from the console, but following a chkdsk I now can. I can
access all of the files and folders from the console but I
am stil not prompted for a password when I log in from it
(I thought that I would need the admin password and only
be able to access the system folders).I do not have an ERD
and when I go through the repair process without this it
does not find a Windows installation.
What are my best options to try and rescue this ?. Any
help would be much appreciated.

As a first step, make a Win2000 boot diskette:
- Format a disk on some other Win2000 PC
- Copy these files to it:
* ntldr
* ntdetect.com
* boot.ini

You can get these files like so:
- ntldr, ntdetect.com: from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD
- boot.ini: Boot your PC with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com
- Run this command: ntfsdos.exe /L:EF (www.sysinternals.com)
- Type e:\boot.ini > a:\boot.ini

When you boot with your Win2000 boot disk, does Win2000 start?

Thanks for the tip. However It still won't boot. I get a message saying that the ntoskrnl is corrupted or missing. The file does exist.

- What are the lines in boot.ini?
- Does c:\winnt\system32\ntoskrnl.exe exist?
- Is your system drive FAT32 or NTFS?
- Can you get into the Command Console?
