Is there a way to create Windows 2000 Professional Boot
Disks from the Microsoft.com web site?

System will not boot -- constantly restarting part way
through the startup cycle. Most likely due to a virus
that has modified start up files or parameters.

I don't have boot disks (lost or never created -- either
way, pretty dumb) or repair disks.

Need to get system running in order to do a full virus
scan and deal with problem.

Any tips?

boot from the win2K CD

boot from the anti virus CD or use a win98 or similar boot
disk to get anti virus check

if you really want the boot disks stick the win2K CD in the
drive of the computer you are now using and open folder
bootdisk and run the makeboot.exe

There is a 4-diskette W2k Setup diskette set, and there is a 1-diskette
W2k Boot diskette. There is a BIG distinction, and often some confusion
of function and nomenclature.

The 4-diskette Setup Diskette Set is created by running makebook or
makebt32, in the \bootdisk directory on the W2k CD. These diskettes are
used when you cannot boot the CD to install W2k; diskette#1 is bootable.
The rest of the install process is follow-your-nose, with identical
results to a CD-booted install process.

The 1-diskette Boot Diskette is created by formatting a blank diskette
under W2k, then (for an IDE drive-based system) copying to that diskette
these 3 files from the hard drive:
boot.ini
ntldr
ntdetect.com
This diskette is bootable and can -in some cases- help you recover from
a corruption problem on the hard drive - but not always. It does NOT
contain a version of W2k, just the 3 files that at boot time (under BIOS
direction) locate the system on the hard drive, do the necessary
preloading housekeeping, and initiate the actual W2k system load and
subsequent execution.

Here's my genaric boot disk post:

There are three different disk that are often called "boot disks" used
for Windows 2000:

1. A set of 4 diskettes used for starting Windows 2000 Setup.
2. A single boot disk that will start your Windows 2000 installation if
your boot sector becomes damaged.
3. A single DOS boot disk that can be used to flash your BIOS.

Which do you need?

If 1. Insert your Win2k CD in any PC running DOS or WIN9x or WIN2k,
browse to the "BOOTDISK" directory and type "MAKEBOOT.EXE".

If 2. Format a blank floppy and copy boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com
on to the floppy.

If 3. Insert your Win3K CD and browse to the VALUEADD/3RDPARTY/CA_ANITV
directory and run the program MAKEDISK.BAT which will create a bootable
floppy with Antivirus files to check your boot sector. Just add the
necessary BIOS flashing files to the disk (you may have to delete the
antivirus program to have enough room).

If it were me, I'd make all three and save them, you may need them
sooner or later.

Hope this helps?
