Mutliple applications on a Windows 2000 server are complaining about being
out of memory on a Compaq W8000 workstation. There are 2 GB of physical
memory, and about 200 MB of that physical memory is in use according to Task
Manager.

Would these out of memory messages more typically be associated with video
drivers? Maybe memory on the video card is exhausted?

Has anyone removed "everyone" as a user category?

Can you be more specific? I never allow the Everyone group access to any
of my local disks, but this has been this way for years on this computer,
and the out of memory messages started happening when I installed
screensavers on the computer. I'm suspecting that the video driver is
complaining about not enough video memory for some operation, but I have a
feeling it is something I may be able to tune out through video settings.

I'm using an ATI RADEON 9500 Pro with Catalyst 3.8 drivers.

DO NOT put screensavers on the server. Screensavers typically consume 100% of available CPU cycles and dramatically interfere with
the server Operating System.

Remove your screensavers and you'll remove your problem.

I use Windows 2000 Server for my personal machine because I value the disk
mirroring capabilities and find it a much safer and more reliable way to
recover a machine's boot device than relying on hardware RAID.

This could be due to not enough virtual memory i.e. page file. First
check and see how much free space you have on your Windows drive. Then
check your virtual memory settings. System Properties, Advanced,
Performance, Settings, Advanced and then Change under Virtual Memory.
You should have at least 3 gig of virtual memory. It can be set on
multiple drives for performance.

I checked, and I have even more than I thought:

C Drive: 256 MB
R Drive: 2 GB
S Drive: 2 GB

So in theory I have 4.25 GB of virtual memory paging files.

I have a feeling it is not some straightforward shortage of virtual memory,
because from the time that the screensaver starts to the time when it starts
running out of memory, the handle count, page pool, and nonpage pool of all
processes on the system barely changes up at all.
