Hi, Robert.
We have noticed that on a number of installation of our Access DB, when the
user first starts up our program, the Windows 2000 Installer launches.
The most common cause for this annoying problem is the following scenario:
1.) The Windows Administrator wants to save time/disk space so does a
partial installation of Microsoft Office or Microsoft Access on the computer,
marking one or more components "Install on first use."
2.) The user starts up Access and needs that component just to run the
application. (Hint: It wasn't an "optional" component.)
3.) The Windows Installer attempts to install the component, make the
appropriate Windows Registry entries, and then launch Access. The Windows
Registry step fails because:
4.) For security reasons, the user doesn't have permissions to write to the
Windows Registry. (Hint: The user shouldn't be installing software, if that
is indeed the organization's policy. Otherwise, give the users
administrative permissions on their own workstations.)
5.) Step 3 is repeated every time the user launches Access (and probably
any application in the Office Suite). Four out of five trained Windows
Systems Administrators (the ones with the certifications) can't figure out
why this happens. (Don't laugh. Five years ago it was probably under 1%.)
The solution is to install the complete Office Suite (or Access application)
under the Windows Administrator's account or give the user temporary
permissions to write to the Windows Registry for the installation of the
component(s) necessary for launching Access. (Hint: Installing the
"Typical" installation isn't the "complete" installation.)
HTH.
