Hello,

I have an AMD K6-2 450 MHz machine with about 384M of RAM. Previously, I had
Windows XP installed, and the performance was not great, but bearable. I
recently installed Windows 2000 Professional on a separate drive, and the
performance is miserable. I turned off a bunch of services, but mundance things
like bringing up the start menu sometimes take 10 or more seconds. Aside from
the obvious statement that the machine is underpowered, I'd appreciate some
advice on optimizing Windows 2000 Pro for an old machine. As I said, Windows XP
worked pretty well, so I can't see why Windows 2000 should not. The hard drive
is a rebuilt 40G 5600 RPM.

Thanks,

JM

- Have a look at your task list. What's eating up your CPU time?
- Your machine may be infected with spyware. Run AdAware
and see what you get.
- Run msconfig.exe (http://www.svrops.com/svrops/dwnldoth.htm)
and check your startup tasks.
- Some virus scanners can be very heavy on the CPU.
