Difference between Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Serv

Hi,

I have a question of comparison between the 2 operating systems, i.e. WIN2k professional and WIN2k Server. Can some one help me out in understanding that if we purchase a server why do we need to install (or why i s it recommended) WIN2K Server on it. Leaving aside the Active Directory portion I want to know what features are there in the Windows 2000 Server that I will miss by installing a Windows 2000 Professional on my server machine.

I need to setup a LAN with 10 machines on it. I have a server machine. Should I go out for Windows 2000 server on it OR Windows 2000 professional? Can any one send me a link to any comparison OR something from Microsoft as a recommendation ?

Will really appreciate help from yourside,
Regards,

You need to decide if you want a peer to peer or a domain network and if
security is paramount. There are 1000's of sites with all this information.
A server with w2k pro on it may as well be a pc

Greetings --

The two operating systems are designed to perform completely
different roles. Are you going to be using the machine as a server,
or as a workstation?

Hi,

You already have a server (domain controller, dns, dhcp) right ? So if you
want or have any software that you want to use that only works in server you
need 2000 Server... if you by the other hand only want to use software that
needs 2000 than you should use 2000 Professional.

The main differences between 2000 Server and 2000 Professional is that 2000
Server it´s used to create Domain Controller, DNS Server, DHCP Server -
Active Directory, Can have Terminal Server, Terminal Licence Server on
it.... 2000 Professional is the stand-alone Operating System. You can say
2000 Professional can be the arms, legs whatever... but for the brain you
have to have 2000 Server...

Thank you all for replying to my email. Every word definitely helped. Here is a little bit more detail about what I intend to do...

A 10 user (workgroup OR domain, depending upong if I go for Win 2K server or Win 2k Professional) Lan setup. I intend to run an Oracle based, web application on one of the machine treating it as a server. The only question that I had in my mind was that why should I go for Windows 2000 Server when I can make a workgroup of the 10 users and use Windows 2000 Pro? Though I am buying a server machine, because of the requirements of Oracle based Web application but still I entagled myself in to this question when a cost/benefit analysis came into consideration.

This application server (using Win 2K professional) will also allow access to users on other location through WAN. Does any one of you gentelmen see a problem with this... Is there a green signal for me to use Windows 2000 Pro on the Server machine, and create a workgroup instead of a domain...

Thanks again to all for prompt replies.

If you're planning on using a web based program you will probably run into
connection limit problems under 2K pro. It's restricted to 10 concurrent
inbound network connections.
