Windows 2000 does not recognize monitor driver

I upgraded to Windows 2000 (from '98), and Windows 2000
does not recognize my Acer Monitor Driver. I went to the
manufacturer's website and they forwarded me to BenQ.com
to download a legacy driver (the website states that the
driver is supported by Windows 2000). The monitor is an
Acer 77e. When I go to add/remove hardware, I direct the
setup to the folder that I stored the downloaded driver.
Windows 2000 tells me that there is no recognized driver
in the folder. So, Windows 2000 defaults back to a 16-bit
color scheme. In the device manager, the monitor is shown
in error. Please help. Thanks!

This indicates an issue with the graphics adapter and or driver, nothing
really to do with the monitor.

Dave,
If this is a graphics adapter problem, how do I
troubleshoot. I am showing an error on the Video
Controller (VGA compatible) under device manager. Thanks
for your help!

Check the hardware manufacturer's web site for the latest Windows 2000
driver for your graphic adapter.
