Save it somewhere else (even rename it) and then see if your
system boots correctly. Otherwise run your anti-virus software
and see if it finds this file. Lastly, search your win2K CD cab
files for it. If Win2k is anything like earlier systems, you can use
extract.exe on the .cab files, not to actually extract, but just to
list their contents and >> to a file.
whenever i see a file that i have doubts about i go to the
sysmantec site and use search to look for that file. if
it is a known virus/worm it will tell you which one(s) it
is but read everything carefully. it may be a legit file
that is AFFECTED by a virus/worm. for example, if i did
not know that rtvscan was symantec's real time virus
scanner and i did a search for it, all of the
viruses/worms that attempts to end it (and other antivirus
programs) on an infected system would be listed. if i
didn't read the info and just jumped to the conclusion
that rtvscan was a virus/worm i might try to remove it
(which would not be a good idea). i did try to search for
smsc.exe and did not find any reference to a virus/worm.
it may be a legit file, but check with others. good luck.
My laptop was wacking out on Friday... wouldn't pull up any websites,
Norton AV Corporate Edition would disappear after 5 seconds of being
up, regedit would also disappear.
So I searched and found smsc.exe running, and found out from
alt.comp.anti-virus that this is a W32/Gaobot.worm variant.
Norton STILL hasn't updated their Gaobot fix tool or added this to
their definitions, that I can tell.
I can't submit the smsc.exe file to Norton b/c Corporate Edition
doesn't have that feature, and the IT dude didn't care on Friday
afternoon. He just said remove it manually. I don't use my laptop
very often, so I'm just going to wait until Norton catches up...
hopefully very soon. I had just ran Windows update on Tuesday so I
don't know how this thing got on there.
