Boot to the XP setup CD, and press R to run the "Recovery Console" Run the
command:
CHKDSK D: /r
(where D: is the drive letter)

The Recovery Console is available on some preinstalled systems during the
recovery startup options. There are boot floppies available from the MS site
that allow it. Some people just borrow a setup cd and press 'r' during cd
start.
