As a precaution I'd run a RAM test and the mfg's harddrive diagnostic first.

If the hardware checks out ok...
then hit F8 while booting and select: Last good configuration.

Now if that does not work...an XP cd of the same version as exists
must be used to enter the repair console
(unless you already have it installed, which is doubtful)

From the repair console...you'd need to rename "system" to system.bad (for
example)
then rename system.sav to "system

Your system has a Registry corruption, the message indicates the
System Hive cannot be loaded. To fix, there is a process where
you boot the Windows XP CD-ROM. One of the boot options
is a mode called Recovery Console. From here you do the steps
in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to replace that
Registry Hive with a backup copy.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545
Most OEM computers do not supply an XP Install CD-ROM.
Any type of XP disk can be used to access the recovery console.
If you contact the computer manufacturer some will send or sell
you a XP CD for a minimal cost.
*Note: Doing a registry hive replacement can sometimes cause
data loss as the older replacement may not match the
state of the machine when the hive became corrupted.

Do NOT use System.Sav - that is an initial install Registry hive backup.
If you use that the machine's state will be restored incorrectly.

Thank you for the correction...

I should have said: system.bak *if one exists*

system.sav would be used as a last resort

my hard drive did fail, but I don't Have the Windows Cd

My suggestion would be to purchase a new harddrive and also to purchase a
Windows XP cd.

Remove the old drive and put in the new one...
then install XP on it.

Once you get XP up and running...
yoy can try slaving the old drive to the system
and seeing if you can at least copy your data off of it.

Chnaces are most of the data will be recoverable
because it looks like the drive has not gone into total failure as of yet.

well, you will need to
borrow someone's windows
cd or buy one or figure out
what the method was used
to install windows on the
machine.

--------------------------

the message you are getting
indicates that your registry
files/hive cannot be loaded.

files (any files) can become
corrupted for a variety of
reasons.

however, in most cases the
corruption can be avoided
by simply performing disk
and file tune-ups regularly, like
defrag, chkdsk
and registry cleaning.

programs like these help
a great deal:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/cleanup.htm

-----------------------

if you could access the o.s.
via safemode, then you could
do a system restore.

however, since the o.s. is not
accessible, then you need
to repair the o.s. at the disk level.

with a windows cd you
can use either the recovery
console using specific commands
or perform a "repair installation".

a repair installation would
be the best option as it is
basically automated to repair
and replace any system files
that may have been corrupted
and it will preserve your program
files as well.

perhaps, you can remove
your harddrive and install
it as a slave onto another
pc, whereas you can try
to repair it.

but if there is another pc
available to you, then there
is likely a windows cd avail
as well.

it would be better to borrow
that cd and use it on the
dysfunctional computer.

if you have neither a windows
cd or another pc at your
disposal, then you simply
need to purchase windows
again. essentially, there is
no way to work on the computer
at a disk level (hd) without
a disk (cd).

again, if your pc had windows
installed on it, you should
find out how to avoid another
purchase of windows.

-------------

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

the kb above basically describes
how to use the recovery console
to restore a baseline registry. it
is out of date an out of date registry
but none the less a functional one.

once you have windows running
basically, then you can bring your
registry hive current as noted in
the rest of the kb.
