When browsing the web or reading a document, wide screen displays waste
a lot of space. Is there a window manager available that will maximize
windows to only the left or right half of the display? This would be
easier than manually resizing a window and carefully moving it to the
right place. TIA, Spacey

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but what about docking
your task bar vertically? When you maximize your windows, they should size
appropriately. I have a multi-monitor configuration and use one of the
monitors for doing this. If you have a lot of windows open, it's a lot
easier to read the captions in this configuration.

You could also use a third-party sidebar like http://desktop.google.com
which has a lot of plug-in's for displaying additional information. Windows
Vista will have a similar feature.

Thanks John for you input.

ps. I should have mentioned that there is a way to do this in Windows,
but I am not satisfied with it because I want windows opening to left
or right half of the screen by default. The way to do it for two open
windows is to minimize all but those two, then right-click the task bar
and select "tile windows vertically". Spacey

WinSize will work somewhat like this on XP, even though designed for
Win95. There is also AutoSize and FreeSnap that I will look into.
