window in systray randomly pops up then dissapears

i have a small icon shaped like a rectangular window which will appear at
various times seemingly unassociated with any particular program or task im
performing towards the middle of the systray. it will stay maybe 3 seconds
and dissapear. happens approx every few minutes roughly. is this some sort of
windows function going on? ive run virus scan, adaware and spybot but has
found nothing wrong.
