Window focus changes unexpectedly

I'm running XP SP2 on an AMD Athon 64.
For some time now, I've had this quirk: sometimes when I open a new
browser window, the new window appears, but suddenly the previous
window is brought to the forefront. That previous window could be
Outlook or any other application.
This most commonly occurs when the new window is requesting input, such
as a login screen. I start typing, but before I can finish the focus
shifts to the previous window and my typing goes into oblivion.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm not sure why XP might doing that in this specific instance, but
you might want to try Microsoft's TweakUIXP. Select General > Focus >
check the "Prevent Applications from stealing focus" box.

That would likely work; what's happening is there is something occurring in
the window that comes forward so it takes the focus. Otherwise you would be
unaware of it. In general it's a good thing but not necessarily, I know
<g>.
