Hey Clive ...

A couple of questions for you ...

1. Is this a server or workstation. If a server, is this a DC?
2. What changed before the problem occurred? Anything added? Anything
uninstalled?
3. How long have you let it sit? If you are only waiting 10 minutes, go
get a copy of coffee and see if 30 minutes does any better :)
4. Does unplugging the network cable and rebooting speed it up?

hi,

its a standalone w/s and apparently nothing changed on the pc appart from
the problem i have now. I have left it sitting for 18 hours now and it hasnt
got any further. I installed a fresh copy of win2k last night (different
directory) and that boots fine.
I have a feeling it has been attacked by a virus. If so i should be able to
do a virus scan from the new install, any other ideas?

Cheers

Clive ...

A virus scan from the new install would be a good step.

One thing I would like to see is if you are dealing with a registry issue.
From the new install, you will complete the following steps. It is assumed
that the original install is c:\winnt.

1. Rename the system and software registry hives.
--- Go to C:\winnt\system32\config
------- Rename system to system.old
------- Rename software to software.old

2. Copy over the backup registry hives.
--- From C:\Winnt\Repair copy the system and software files to
C:\winnt\system32\config

Now reboot into the original install. Does it get any further?
