I have recently started having a problem with windows.
When I start the computer it goes through the boot
sequence and i can still access the bios and boot menus
using the keyboard. Windows starts up and gets to
the "press Ctrl-Alt-Del to begin", however when I press
the keys, nothing happens and i do not have a mouse
cursor. I can shut the computer down properly by pressing
the power button, but that is all. I have done an
emergency repair but this has not resolved the problem. I
don't really want to reinstall windows as I will lose some
of my data. Any other suggestions?

I realise that your keyboard works in the BIOS but I would
still try a different keyboard & mouse.

If this fails then you may have to re-install Windows. Your
data is probably safe but if you want absolute safety then
I recommend this:
- Buy a second-hand 4 GByte disk. They cost very little.
- Install it as a master disk.
- Temporarily disconnect your existing disk.
- Install Win2000
- Connect your existing disk as a slave disk.

You will now have access to your existing files. For your
future computing operation, you should very seriously
consider these points:
- Keep all your data on drive D: (your slave disk). This
means that your data will be independent of your operating
system.
- Back up your important data at least once each week.
If you don't back it up then it's not important, because
you're prepared to lose it in case of a mishap.

I am using a laptop. I have tried alternative keyboards
and mice with no improvement. I already keep most of my
data on a different partition, so hopefully I won't lose
too much.
