Win2K Locks up when playing streaming video in Media Player

Media player locks up , and locks a NEW installation of
Win2K with full updates , when trying to stream video from
the internet.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this ? I have tried
both uninstalling media player 9 and installing an earlier
player, but with the same effect.
Media player 9 seems to hog up all resources when it runs
as well.
I am Athlon 1.4 gig, 20 gig drive with 15 gig free, 256
meg or ram and a NEW install of Win2K Pro. Riva TNT pro 32
meg video.
